20 Week (5 Month) Farrier Course

LENGTH: 20 WEEKS: (800 hours of instruction)

(includes classes, tools, books and bunkhouse)

REGISTRATION FEE: $200.00

CLASS DATES: A new class begins every Monday

SCHEDULE: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

DESCRIPTION: This is an advanced five-month farrier course that includes all the basic skills taught in our other course but includes learning how to handle and shoe Draft Horses. Tapping into the draft horse market can be rewarding but shoeing the draft horse as a working animal requires to learn different techniques.

• Trimming

• Forge work

• Field work

• Hands-on experience with horses, draft horses and mules

Course Outline: This course allows you to work with different breeds and disciplines of horses including Draft Horses. Proper guidance and a little more knowledge can erase the intimidation in shoeing these gentle giants. Our course will give you hands-on experience with shoeing and handling Draft Horses including Draft Horse handling, putting them in a stock to shoe them and basic blacksmithing skills where you learn to make shoes from stock. This course will also cover dealing with unruly horses and “backing up the toe”.

Written test for advanced farrier certification for the Brotherhood of Working Farriers Association (BWFA) will be given at the request of the student upon completion of the course. After passing the tests, the student can apply for membership with the Brotherhood of Working Farriers for a fee of $85.00 and a picture.
