COURSE OUTLINE: Tucson School of Horseshoeing is the only horseshoeing school that offers a 7 month Farrier course. This advanced seven-month Farrier course includes all the basic skills taught in our other courses, in addition to a month of trimming and shoeing ponies and mini ponies. The month includes normal and corrective shoeing. This is not an easy job and in cases of deformed feet, it is a decidedly difficult task. Students are taught natural balance trimming, hoof distortion, and guidelines on how to correct them from a simple, common sense perspective. Small ponies will gain too much weight resulting in laminitis or founder. Students will spend the month working on these ponies.
Upon completion of the seven-month course, the student will be proficient in the
• Anatomy of the legs and feet,
• Physiology of the legs and feet,
• Equine Conformation,
• Basic Blacksmithing,
• Trimming the foot,
• Leveling and Balancing the foot,
• Normal shoeing,
• Corrective shoeing,
• Forging shoes from bar stock,
• Hot shoeing,
• Horse handling,
• Equine nutrition,
• Starting your own business.
The student will be more than ready to go out and start a successful Farrier business.
Written test for advanced farrier certification for the Brotherhood of Working Farriers Association (BWFA) will be given at the request of the student upon completion of the course. After passing the tests, the student can apply for membership with the Brotherhood of Working Farriers for a fee of $85.00 and a picture
